Meet The Artist

Fatma Özçay

Born in 1970 in Gerede, Bolu, Fatma Özçay is the youngest member of the renowned Özçay family. In 1987, encouraged by her brothers, she began studying tezhip (illumination) under Prof. Fatma Çiçek Derman at the Kubbealtı Cultural and Art Foundation. With her talent and the guidance of her brother Mehmed Özçay, she quickly mastered the art. Known for her precise and delicate brushwork, she draws inspiration from 16th-century classical Ottoman designs, infusing them with her unique style.
Much of her work involves illuminating her brothers’ calligraphy pieces. She has held numerous personal exhibitions alongside her brothers, Mehmed and Osman Özçay, and participated in exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad. From 2008 to 2012, she taught at the Foundation for Classical Turkish Arts, sharing her expertise with students. Her works are featured in private and public collections worldwide. Notably, she contributed to the design of decorative elements for the expansion project of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. Fatma Özçay continues to preserve and innovate within the tradition of Turkish-Islamic art.
